Background of the Study
Traditional divination has long served as a cornerstone of indigenous belief systems in Eket, often influencing decisions related to mental health. Practitioners of divination are revered as custodians of spiritual knowledge, providing guidance on personal and communal issues (Etim, 2023). In recent years, there has been a resurgence of interest in understanding how these practices intersect with modern mental health decision-making. Many community members rely on divinatory consultations to interpret psychological distress and to decide on appropriate treatment avenues (Okon, 2024). This practice, while rooted in tradition, presents a complex interplay between cultural beliefs and contemporary mental health paradigms. The study critically explores the mechanisms through which divination informs mental health decisions, evaluating its impact on treatment outcomes and community perceptions. It further investigates the tension between traditional and modern practices, aiming to bridge gaps in understanding and to propose integrative approaches that honor cultural heritage while promoting effective mental health care (Mbanefo, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
In Eket, the reliance on traditional divination for mental health decision-making poses challenges for integrating modern mental health services. Conflicting belief systems often result in delayed or inappropriate treatment, leaving individuals at risk of deteriorating psychological health. The lack of empirical studies on the efficacy and impact of divination in mental health further complicates efforts to harmonize traditional and contemporary care models. This study addresses these issues by examining how divinatory practices influence mental health outcomes and decision-making processes (Etim, 2023).
